Contemporary Artist
Trained in textile dyeing at Tokyo University of the Arts, he reinterprets Japanese craft and the culture of the Edo-period courtesan through yuzen dyeing, kimono, footwear, and sculpture — recasting traditional aesthetics in a contemporary form.
Best known for the Heel-less Shoes, conceived from the tall geta of courtesans as his graduation work and later worn by Lady Gaga. His pieces are held in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the National Crafts Museum.
